Purple Rain Voted Best Film Soundtrack Of All Time

Posted October 26 2007 12:08 PM

Prince's 'Purple Rain' has been voted the best film soundtrack of all time.
The album, which accompanied the 1984 film of the same name in which Prince starred, tops a list of the 50 Greatest Movie Soundtracks compiled by the editors of Vanity Fair magazine.
The magazine's bosses said: "The 'Purple Rain' soundtrack is a flawless combination of funk, R'n'B, pop, metal and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s."
'Purple Rain' spawned several hit singles, including 'When Doves Cry', 'Let's Go Crazy' and 'I Would Die 4 U', and during the year of its release Prince topped the US film, singles and album charts at the same time.
In second place was The Beatles' 'A Hard Day's Night', while the soundtrack to 'The Harder They Come' came in at number three.
Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction', British film 'Trainspotting', '70s disco movie 'Saturday Night Fever' and Simon and Garfunkel's 'The Graduate' also featured in the top 10.
The magazine's editors said: "'Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack is required listening for anyone looking to heat up the dance floor. The white suit? Not so much."
The entire top 50 list will be revealed next month in a one-off Conde Nast publication called Movies Rock which will be sent to the subscribers of its 14 magazine titles.
The magazine will feature stories and photographs of the projects, stars, directors and musicians who created the selected movies.
A two-hour documentary also called 'Movies Rock' will be aired on CBS in December.
