Green light for Glastonbury

Posted March 28 2007 08:46 PM

Glastonbury 2007 will go ahead as planned after the local council granted organisers an entertainment licence.

The highlight of the festival season was widely expected to gain approval from Mendip District Council, but the official seal of approval following a hearing yesterday will be welcomed by fans.

Promoter Michael Eavis confirmed that the event had been granted a four-year licence in a statement on the official Glastonbury website.

This year's event, which has been billed as the biggest ever, is expected to include the Killers, the Kaiser Chiefs, the Artic Monkeys and Kasabian, although there will be no official confirmation on the line-up until tickets go on sale.

Local councillors heard evidence from the police, fire brigade, environmental health officers and other interested parties, before granting the four-year licence.

Residents will get a chance to make representations to the council after each annual event, but organisers will not have to re-apply until the current licence expires in 2011.

More than 170,000 people are expected to descend on Worthy Farm in Somerset for the three-day music festival, which starts on June 22nd.

Tickets go on sale on April 1st.
