Snow Patrol release Lennon song for Amnesty

Posted March 13 2007 10:29 PM

Snow Patrol will feature on a CD of John Lennon covers to support the human rights group Amnesty International.

The band is one of 20 artists contributing to Instant Karma and has covered the former Beatle's hit Isolation.

'Isolation really struck [us] as very pertinent for the times in which we live in and especially for the Amnesty project so we wanted to strip it back and make it something quite sinister and beautiful at the same time,' the group said.

Other artists taking part include REM, Christina Aguilera, Jack Johnson and Corinne Bailey Rae.

Yoko Ono, who has donated all music publishing royalties, said: 'It's wonderful that, through this campaign, music which is so familiar to many people of my era will now be embraced by a whole new generation.

'John's music set out to inspire change, and in standing up for human rights, we really can make the world a better place.'

Irene Khan, secretary general of Amnesty International, added: ' We hope this music will bring an awareness of human rights to a new generation. After all, human rights are what make music possible - we wouldn't be able to create music, listen to it or dance to it without freedom of speech, expression, and association.'

The CD will be released on June 12th and proceeds will help the current crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.
