Break's Over: Coldplay Tap Super-Producer Brian Eno For X&Y Follow-Up

Posted February 6 2007 10:04 PM

When we last heard from Coldplay, we didn't actually hear from Coldplay.

Rather, it was a spokesperson for their label, Capitol Records, who did the talking, dispelling rumors that the guys were about to take a five-year hiatus to focus on their families. While refuting the hiatus rumors, Capitol spokesperson Ambrosia Healy did admit that the band's upcoming schedule was a tad light, saying Chris Martin and company were taking "a much-deserved break" and that there was "no timetable for them recording the follow-up to X&Y."

Four months later, it appears that break is over, as the band has begun work on a fourth album, tapping super-producer Brian Eno — who has worked with David Bowie, the Talking Heads and U2, and played synthesizer on X&Y — to helm the sessions.

News of the collaboration began circulating more than a week ago, when Eno himself announced it during an interview with BBC Radio. But it wasn't until this weekend that management for the band confirmed the news, adding that Eno would be "co-producing" the album with the band.

During the broadcast, Eno said the new album will be "very original and very different from what they've done before." And on Sunday, the BBC aired more of the interview with the producer, who added that Coldplay were looking to "take their music somewhere else. We're really at the very beginning of it, but it sounds very promising to me."

Also during the BBC broadcast, Coldplay guitarist Jonny Buckland acknowledged the collaboration but added that Eno "picked us, really. With someone like Brian, if you can persuade him to work with you, you're doing well."

So where will that work take place? And when will fans be able to hear any new material from Coldplay? Healy said there was no additional info on where recording is happening, nor is there any tentative due date for the record.
