Nickelback Continue To Fly Under The Radar To Multiplatinum Success

Posted December 29 2006 01:41 PM

Nickelback might just be the most successful under-the-radar band of all time, and according to singer Chad Kroeger, "That's fine by us."

Hardly a headline has been written about the Canadian rockers over the past year, but all the while their fifth album, All the Right Reasons, has quietly gone quadruple platinum, scoring five #1 rock singles: "Photograph," "Animals," "Savin' Me," "Rockstar" and "Far Away." After 60 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the LP remains in the top 25, and they racked up American Music Awards nominations in September.

"We aren't new anymore, so I don't expect us to be heating up the media," guitarist Ryan Peake said. "We're just going to do our thing and let the people do the talking. [And sales figures] are kind of the scoreboard."

"We're not critics' darlings," bassist Mike Kroeger, Chad's brother, added. "We're not their type of music, typically, and that's cool. We sold out our last tour, and those are the people we're actually out there making music for."

Rather than rest on their formidable sales figures, Nickelback continue to tour nearly nonstop. "We've got 13 months already touring on this record, and we're going to do one more leg," Chad said of the band's next trek, which kicks off February 20 in Tacoma, Washington, and includes Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin.

When that tour ends on March 19 in Orlando, Florida, Nickelback plan to "recharge the batteries," which for Kroeger could mean writing and producing for other artists, as he's done in the past for Bo Bice and Theory of a Deadman. "I don't always have time to do that, but downtime is playtime, too, so it's going to be a lot of fun," he said.

In the meantime, Nickelback are releasing one more single from All the Right Reasons, the ballad "If Everyone Cared." "It's a wonderful, touching song," Chad said. "I think the title says it all. We just wanted to show how some people around the world, just by having an idea, have really made a huge impact on the world, and that's all it takes. We just saw a rough cut of the video, and we are all really excited."
