Take That cling to top of UK charts for third week

Posted December 18 2006 02:26 PM

Take That held on to the number one spot in the British singles and albums chart for a third week, the Official UK Charts Company said on Sunday.

"Patience," the band's first single since reforming last year, held off aging rocker        Cliff Richard, who came straight in at number two with "21st Century Christmas."

Take That's comeback album "Beautiful World" also secured a third week at number one, ahead of the Oasis greatest hits compilation "Stop the Clocks" and Irish band Westlife's "The Love Album."

"Patience" has been the top-selling single for four weeks, although the band is unlikely to have the Christmas number one with "X Factor" winner Leona Lewis's "A Moment Like This" forecast to grab the coveted honor.

"We're hearing downloads on the song are smashing records and that, even if Leona failed to sell another copy, she would already have the Christmas number one," said a spokesman for bookmakers William Hill, which has stopped taking bets on what will be the top of the Christmas pops.

Elsewhere in the singles chart, U.S. singer Gwen Stefani climbed five places to number three with "Wind it Up," while dance act Cascada's remake of Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" made a strong showing, rising from 17 to four.

Booty Luv proved less resilient, slipping three to number five with "Boogie 2Nite," while U.S. rappers Akon and Eminem and "Smack That" dropped four places to six.

Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name," theme song of the latest James Bond movie release "Casino Royale," was at seven, just ahead of "Tell Me" by P Diddy featuring Christina Aguilera, which last week was at 20.

The singles chart was rounded out by "Bing Bang (Time to Dance)," a song from the children's television show "LazyTown" and the Pogues' classic festive single "Fairytale of New York."
