Fatboy Slim Trying Harder With David Byrne

Posted July 3 2006 12:22 PM

After celebrating his career with the recent release of a greatest hits package, 'Why Try Harder,' Fatboy Slim tells AOL Music he's working to bring a musical to the stage.

The Brighton, England-based DJ/producer, also known as Norman Cook, spent the last year with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne writing a musical based on the life of former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos. Though the two planned to premier the musical in Australia earlier this year, things haven't quite gone according to plan.

"We're a little behind schedule, so DB went out and performed the songs without the full production," Cook explains. "What we're probably going to do is put the soundtrack CD out [in November]. Hopefully, if that does well, we'll get the backing to put the actual version on."

There's more to the story, Cook says, than the idea that Marcos was an icy lady with a shoe fetish: "She's remembered for having a lot of shoes, not for killing people, taking U.S. government aid and spending it in Studio 54, hanging out with Bianca Jagger."

Finding the right Imelda has been a struggle, he says. "We auditioned hundreds of singers, and they just don't sing with any passion. We need [someone who can sing like] a Filipino Macy Gray."
