Metal band Metallica have announced that it will rock London’s new Wembley Stadium on July 8th. They will be the first American rock act to play at the new venue.

Wembley Stadium recently reopened its doors after a lengthy reconstruction project that saw delays that caused it to miss the mid-season 2006 planned reopening.

Pop icon George Michael is scheduled to be the first music act to take the stage at Wembley with performances planned for June 9th and 10th. U.K. band Muse will play the venue on the following weekend.

Metallica have become icons in heavy metal and are known for their wild fans. The band issued a statement on Monday concerning their plans for the event: "This is the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium we're talking about, freshly delivered in time for us to test its barely dry foundations with a little live 'Tallica."

The statement also alluded to plans for the band to bring “a few of our friends along" for the show.
